Social Realist Drama conventions

This genre introduced a new type of film; it included serious social issues placed within the society of poverty and contemporary culture. The 'realisms' within the film present an aspect of life as it is lived which in this case is the lives of youths today who are living in the inner city with working class backgrounds. They live within a society were poverty, crime and drugs is part of their everyday lives, this is what is portrayed within many of Noel Clarke's films under this genre such as Kidulthood, Adulthood and 4321. They involve gun crime, drugs, sex, gangs and represent youths in an unseen light.
For our film to follow this genre we need to consider the type of characters and how they are portrayed within our trailer. The lighting used is usually dark as a connotation of depression and danger that runs throughout the characters daily lives. Also the clothes are very stereotypically to the social class of the characters, hoodies and tracksuits remain throughout Adulthood and Kidulthood however a sense of money is also very apparent. For example Uncle Curtis (Trevor’s uncle in Kidulthood) is represented as a wealthy gangster and because of his wealth he is idolized by Trevor and his friends, the power he holds is tied up with his money and the possessions he has around him. We need to consider how characters like this impact the storyline and how to achieve this?
Many of the conventions of this genre revolve around the language of the characters, their clothes, actions and their attitude towards the society in which they live in.
